In a recently published report it was stated that Philip Morris plan to sell and produce their legendary cigarette brand - Marlboro with their old Indian partner Godfrey Philips, president of Godfrey Philips.
Philip Morris Tobacco Companies, also named Altria Group, are one of the world's largest tobacco corporations. Along with the well-known Marlboro brand, Altria is the producer of other famous barnds like Parliament, Virginia Slims, L&M, Benson & Hedges, etc.
In order to fulfill this initiative, Philip Morris plan to create a join-venture with Indian businessman KK Modi. The parties hold 36 % of Godfrey Philips each.
According to the plan, Godfrey Philips will assume manufacturing, distribution and sales of Marlboro, and Philip Morris will be responsible for marketing.
Both parties have discussed the offer but a definite result hasn’t been announced yet.
This initiative allows the tobacco giant to enlarge the brand’s distribution network, avoid import levies and respectively raise sales of Marlboro cigarettes.
President of Godfrey Philips has confirmed the common plan regarding the local manufacturing of Marlboro, but has also added: “…We have discussing it, but no decision has been made yet.”
If the discussions will result positively, the venture could be created by mid-year.
